The Storm Water Management Program (SWMP) supports the City of Houston in its implementation of citywide storm water drainage improvements and management practices.
Specific work efforts within the SWMP include:
- The implementation of storm drainage improvements to the Texas Medical Center (TMC) and various neighborhood storm drainage improvement projects
- Floodplain Management
- Support of the City's participation in the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP)
- The City of Houston Comprehensive Drainage Plan (CDP)
The SWMP designs and constructs Capital Improvement Projects (CIP) in order to provide increased levels of flood protection for Houston and its citizens.
The City has received a federal grant from the Federal Emergency Management Agency's (FEMA) Hazard Mitigation Grant Program (HMGP) to fund 75% of the TMC-area projects; the City is responsible for the remaining 25% local share. Methodist Hospital and Baylor College of Medicine have committed $5 million to this cause. Several citywide neighborhoods were also selected for improvement under the SWMP.
